Replacement Consumer Unit in Newcastle and Surrounding Areas
Upgrading an old consumer unit to one that meets current 17th Edition wiring regulations is something that people may have to consider, especially those living in properties with old re-wireable fuse boxes.
When older consumer units in Newcastle were first installed we did not have the amount of electrical equipment that we now take for granted around our home. Electric cookers and showers alone require modern and substantial protection and supply, along with modern lighting circuits, power to out buildings, all electric heating systems, the list is endless. When combined the need for modern protection and the requirement for upgrading becomes obvious. View our other services here.

17th Edition Wiring Regulations
The 17th edition of the wiring regulations introduced in 2008 and most recently edited in 2016 requires that most circuits in a domestic property are protected by an RCD. It is often a better and cheaper option to upgrade consumer units in Newcastle rather than alter the existing installation in order to comply with these regulations.
In addition to the 17th edition regulations the latest update that are applicable as from 1st January 2016 are:
421.1.201 Within domestic (household) premises, consumer units and similar switchgear assemblies shall comply with BS EN 61439-3 and shall:
(i) have their enclosure manufactured from non-combustible material (metal), or
(ii) be enclosed in a cabinet or enclosure constructed of non-combustible material and complying with Regulation 132.12.
NOTE 1: Ferrous metal, e.g. steel, is deemed to be an example of a non-combustible material.
NOTE 2: The implementation date for this regulation is the 1st January 2016, but does not preclude compliance with the regulation prior to that date.
